The seven deadly sins. Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Pride, Envy, Sloth, Wrath. Created by men, flourished by men and inside of men. The sins of which we must avoid that will eventually lead to our demise. There was no known reason of keeping these sins locked up inside our hearts. People thought it was the most coward thing anyone could have mentioned. We believed that by being savages, it would make us be more in touch with our true nature. The eternity of men’s sin. Cruel yet elegant. Intelligence has given us the gift of understanding. Why are we the most cruel? The drawback of intelligence. We know how to make another being suffer through psychological and through physical. Animals are beings capable of tearing us apart, but through this intelligence we invented ways to kill them and to protect ourselves. It was a gift and a curse we must bear. It is never easy to hide the human nature, but society has kept us from doing that. It says that it is immoral to kill, to be cannibals and to deny the rules. The system that keeps us from doing evil. It really makes us wonder, why we ever invented such a restricting one when those in the higher-ups get to disobey. The eternity of us. We shall remain forgotten yet remembered by those that we love. The story of men and us.

The year 1258, the world was beginning to develop. This was when he was born. Dyrien, A boy who grew up in a small village named Frindel. Frindel, a humble little town in the east of the castle, Glendel. As obvious as it is, Dyrien was a peasant. Dyrien never met his biological parents. He was dropped off at a home in the village, as what his ‘mother’ had said. This did not upset him at all surprisingly. Being uneducated, Dyrien may not have understood the reasoning behind it, but he knew that his parents have a reason. The boy played and helped out his parents at a blacksmith in the village. The village never had a school or church to teach children. Knowledge was passed down from parents to their children. Dyrien wanted to become a knight. He wanted to become the knight that protects the king and gain a noble status. He wanted to make this little village known to the discovered lands. The most unforgettable thing in his life was when he experienced death in front of his eyes. A fire. A flame that started out from nowhere. One that changed him in his short life. His eyes fixed on the flames of horror and despair. His whole world crashing down from his eyes. Tears of agony ran down his puffy cheeks. His legs felt weak. It was indescribable. The sight of his home. The raid. He did what any sane person would do, he ran into the black flames. Dyrien bolted to his home. “Why?” He heard a voice saying. “Why, Dyrien? Why did they do this?” He spun, an image burned into his brain. Yet, he felt a nostalgic feeling to the scene. A memory? A nightmare? A friend trapped under the orange fire. “Vinder?” No response….. Everywhere screams can be heard in the night sky. Everyone was fleeing for their lives only to be captured. He closed his ears hoping to block out the blood-curdling screams coming from every direction. Babies, children, women and men. All being mercilessly killed. Why has god forsaken me? Dyrien thought. The final scene was being played. His home, in shambles. He knelt in the scorching flames. His face grew dark. He slowly felt the pain. “Mom, Dad…” he murmured. He then felt a sharp pain at his abdomen, he cried in agony, and fell, he laid on the floor wanting his life to end. A raider? Must have been those people, why have they done this? He heard footsteps slowly getting closer. “Poor child, shot by an arrow and watching his village burnt. Don’t worry, you will soon join them.” The voice spoke. Time stood still when the voice drew his sword. His eyes filled with confusion, pain and anger. Without a second thought, Dyrien pulled out the arrow bolt and forced it into the man’s arm. His eyes red with pure animosity. With quick reactions, he drew the sword from the man’s holder. With adrenaline, he held the sword up and sliced the man’s arm off. He repeatedly stabbed the man making him writhe in agony. He dropped the sword and left the man to die. Dyrien’s face and clothing were covered in the smell of blood. “W-What did i just do?” “You killed a man, a man who has destroyed your entire village.” A voice could be heard. “W-Who are you?” The voice laughed maniacally. “Oh my poor misguided child, I am you.” Dyrien was confused, what was this voice talking about? Why does he say it is me? I can’t see him anywhere, yet he is able to speak to me. “What are you?” Dyrien murmured. “As I said, I AM YOU. The true nature of humankind. Cruel yet elegant in battle. The madness you keep locked up inside not wanting to let it escape.” Dyrien was still confused, a child like him would not understand this darkness that lurks within every man and woman. Suddenly, a sound was heard. Something was emerging from the burnt debris.

“Come on! We are going to be late!” My friend screamed. “Just a minute!” I shouted back. After my morning wash, i raced down the stairs grabbed my delicious ham and egg sandwich and grabbed my backpack. “Bye mom!” as I charged towards the door. While biting the sandwich i rushed to the school bus hoping it won’t leave before I managed to board it with my friend, Lorence. The school bus driver somehow saw us running and waited for a few more seconds. “We have got to stop gaming so late.” He said “Yeah, if we haven’t slept that late we wouldn’t have to rush.” We both looked at each other and laughed it off. “Yeah right, gamers for life!” He held up his hand, I glanced at him and decided to go with it. At this moment, the occupants of the school bus stared at our direction, some giggled, some just gave the obvious confused and irritated look. /It took awhile before the bus came to a stop. “Alright you punks, get out before I throw you out.” The asshole said. “Yeesh, talk about grumpy today.” The same dreaded sound can be heard. The bell. Me and Lorence hated it, it signifies the start of the day and our separation of the day. I only have one friend in the class i was going to. Physics….. I despised it, physics is one of my worst subjects. As I made my way towards my locker, I saw my peers looking at me. I looked around warily not knowing what has happened or what will happen. “Wade Jackson, please report to the principal’s office immediately.” I stared at the speaker in bewilderment. I have done nothing wrong ever since I came to this school, why are they calling upon me to visit the devil. I walked solemnly towards the office, it is as if something was mocking me for this. I covered my face to hide whatever shame I don’t have and opened the door. The principal was staring at me with soul piercing eyes. What an intimidation, I thought. “Take a seat.” I felt a chill in the air. “What is this about? I have done nothing wrong.” I spoke with fear and perplexion. “You have indeed done nothing wrong, but I have a gift for you.” He took out a gold object. It seemed like it weighed a ton. “This is a gift my father had given to me when I was your age. You probably did not know this but I am your father’s brother.” “I stared at him with my jaw dropped. “Your father didn’t tell you that he was adopted?” I shook my head. “I thought so, he didn’t really like to talk about his adoption. He was so secretive. I wonder why he died.” I stared at the ground as he said the forbidden word. “Sorry, got a little off topic here. I called you here today to pass this down to you personally. I thought, since I have no children of my own, why not pass it down to my nephew instead. This is a relic Wade, it was said to be past down from generation to generation ever since the early 1200’s.” He pushed the object closer to me. I took it from the table slowly, slowly looking up to see the watch. I touched the surface of the watch. I felt its texture, smooth, probably made from pure gold. “ This relic symbolises generosity, kindness, forgiveness and the eternity of love. It never really occurred to me why it did, my father just told me what it meant.” I looked at it closely and saw a slight opening in it. “Alright, I think it is time for you to go back to class.” I nodded and thanked him for the gift. Weird. I can’t believe that this survived through the years. I dragged my feet to my locker to fetch my physics materials and headed to class. As I entered, the whole class stared at me looking somewhat puzzled. I made my way to my desk. “Oh, Wade, take out your textbook and turn to page 192, we will be discussing the subject on the properties of light today.” I flipped the book to the designated page. “Alright, Light travels………..” Her words blurred. I can’t understand what she was saying. I did what any student would do in this situation, start a staring contest with the book. I had to follow the sounds of my fellow peers when they flip their books. After what felt like forever I looked up to see what the time was, I gave an irritated look when the clocked showed 8.05. I decided to look around to see how was here today. There’s my friend Quincy. The bully, afraid of me and is somewhat racist, George. The annoying duo, Jacob and Farrel. The popular girl, Rachel, the nerds are always here and some people that I couldn’t be bothered to notice. There was someone missing… Oh right, Cynthia. The first person I wanted to see today. Her beautiful smile, her long silky hair, her shyness. She was the only person in this room who I ever took the time to know. But as someone as weird and shy like me to have a crush, I never really talked to her. She’s absent today. Is she ill? I wonder if I should visit her. No, no, no, that’s too awkward. I will probably say something so stupid that she will begin to think poorly of me. Even if I did go, one of her friends might already be visiting her already. Maybe, I should text her for her well-being. Just being in the same room as her, damn, I have problems. “Wade!” Mrs.Benson Shouted. “If you could stop staring into space and pay attention maybe you would have passed.” I stared at her and looked down in embarrassment, some chuckled most just ignored. After that grueling one hour in the highest point of hell, I finally got to talk to Quincy. “Yo, Quincy. How’s it going my study-crazed friend?” “Not good, there’s a test tomorrow and the physics quiz is tomorrow. What’s worse I have consecutive tests day after day. I’m doomed, Wade.” “Quincy, relax the tests are gonna go fine, just remember to calm down and distress.” “Easy for you to say, Wade. You have aced almost every class except for Physics and English.” I chuckled and gave him a pat on the back. I made my way out of the classroom. I reached into my pocket, where the piece of gold was hidden. I took it out gently and stared at it intently. I scanned its appearance. Before I knew it, my peers were starting to notice the gold piece. Without hesitation, I dashed to the toilet hoping no one was taking a dump. Being the usual paranoid, I locked the door behind me. I leaned against the door. The smoothness of the gold, it feels like it has been made just recently. Just what is in this gold piece? Why is it made out of gold? Why is it so smooth when it was made in the 1200s? So many questions. The opening I had noticed before could have made this gold piece into some sort of mechanism. I decided to pry it open to see what was inside. The mechanism opened! It was easier than I expected. I stared at its contents and felt a strange sense of nostalgia. “D and S?” I spoke with confusion.

He felt it trembling. “Vinder? Is that you?” No response again. The debris soon formed into a shape of a creature. An inaudible wince. Dyrien moved closer to the embers. A puppy? A small puppy emerging from the jaws of death. Dyrien pulled out his hands to the puppy. A dog? It looks like it is in pain. We should kill it to end its misery. He pulled his hands back. He decided to fight against the urge of the thought. Without a second thought he pushed the embers away and grabbed the puppy. He felt no pain. The puppy still winced as he carried it. Dyrien felt a strange presence behind him. Without a second thought he took a burnt piece of wood and slashed at the back. No one? A large group of howls and shouts of triumph can be heard from a distance. The wolfs of Stormwelk. Notorious for their repeated raids of villages. They have earned a reputation of infamy over the past few years. Dyrien ran like prey running from its predator. He went into the nearby forest hoping to seek shelter from the hell he has just seen. It started to rain. A storm was approaching. With his undefeated luck, Dyrien found a caving in the hillside. The puppy felt cold, but its breathing was stable. He panted. The boy can’t believe the sight he had seen. Why would the wolfs of Stormwelk raid us? We have done nothing to them and have repeatedly paid taxes to them. Why us? Dyrien shivered from the cold air. He hugged the puppy tightly for warmth. I have to rest. He thought. Dyrien closed his eyes, welcoming the sweet embrace of darkness. Yet, embracing the torment of the new life he has just been given. He awoken only to find that the puppy was staring at him. It felt lonely, the same way Dyrien felt alone. But, he felt a small sense of happiness for having to find this sweet creature. The puppy’s leg was still injured and couldn’t walk. Dyrien still had to carry it to a nearby town or village. He looked up. Dawn... A welcoming time of day. They ventured on. Dyrien avoided the scorching sunlight and stayed on the path of the shade of the trees. The puppy snuggled in Dyrien’s arms. “How cute.” Dyrien mumbled as he smiled. He journeyed on the route for hours and yet no signs of life. His stomach grumbled. I need to eat, he thought. Just as he said it. He heard a pig’s groan. He turned around. No pig. This time, a pig screeched. Rustling of leaves could be heard. Dyrien placed the puppy at a nearby tree, hiding it from danger. The pig then came dashing towards him. His instincts told him to jump, so he did. He managed to capture the pig by its waist. The pig was more frightened than ever. It ran faster. Dyrien had to kill it before they got too far from the puppy. Dyrien maneuvered the pig to a tree, making it crash into it. The impact was great enough to knock out the pig. The pig laid on the ground. At this moment, the puppy moved slowly towards the pig. “Thank the heavens that I did not hit you.” He said. The puppy barked sheepishly. Its bark is weak. There is no way I can cook this for me to eat but maybe the puppy can regain some energy from this meat, he thought. He grabbed a nearby rock and smashed the pig’s head in. Dyrien left the stone there to prevent him from throwing up. Dyrien then took another rock to dig into the pig’s contents. He ripped out its guts and fed some raw meat to the puppy. The puppy like any other wolf pounced on it. It enjoyed the raw meat but Dyrien still had to eat something. He then remembered that he could start a fire with just a rock and a stick. His friends back at the village tried this before and it worked. Dyrien followed the procedure through and got a fire going. He had placed rocks into a circle ,placed sticks in the circle and finally started the fire. The fire was burning viciously and was then reminded about the incident that happened last night. He brushed the memory away and continued to fix up the meal. The only way Dyrien was going to cook meat properly was to pierce the meat through a stick and wait for it to be cooked. It would take a long time but it was worth it. After countless minutes of waiting, the meat was ready to be eaten. It wasn’t entirely cooked but it would have to do. By this time, the puppy had finished a large portion of his meal. But couldn’t continue to eat. Dyrien stared at the direction of the sun and wondered, how will I find another life in this state.

Days past, Dyrien managed to enter a village. “Raiders…” The word rang in his head over and over again. “Another village.” Dyrien walked towards the ruins while the puppy was barking with delight. The “nightmare” he called it, images of the past came rushing to his brain. A sign hung from one of the buildings. ‘Welcome to Hukg…..’ it said. “Hukg? Hukgen? This village is in the east!” Dyrien was elated. The magnificent castle, the land of the righteous, the one place Dyrien can start anew. The king of knights, Arthur Pendragon. He may be able to help me to find the wolves who did this, Dyrien thought naively. “Come on, Ulton lets go!” The puppy barked with blind happiness. Dyrien through the broken village and into the Field of Wonders. The castle was just over the horizon. He could see the radiant sun setting over Glendel. He always wanted to visit Glendel but never had the chance to. Dyrien fantasised the possibilities of a new life in Glendel. Who couldn’t? After such a traumatic experience who couldn’t imagine what life could be in a new town? Dyrien headed towards the dying light together with Alton. How long has it been since I have seen another human? Days? Weeks? I don’t care. I have finally reached the greatest land in all of Kyren. The sun finally setted. The beautiful sky of the night arose. The castle was lighted up its light shined through the field. Dyrien looked up. He was amazed. His eyes reflected the magnificence of the night sky. “What a beautiful night. I wish this could last forever.” With that last thought Dyrien threaded into Glendel.

“D and S? What are these? Names? Some kind of lingo in the past?” I stared at it intently. Ploop. I heard something. “Is someone in there?” The sound of flushing could be heard. The door opened and what stood there was another student. “I was taking a dump in there, don’t mind me.” He walked towards the door and unlocked the door. I just stood there wondering why I didn’t take the time to notice another student was in there. Oh well. The deafening sound of my impending doom started ringing again. Recess is over. I walked sluggishly to my next class. Math…. not as bad as my other subject but is overwhelmingly boring. “I wish school had a skip button..” I mumbled. The day ended faster than I expected. A few teachers were absent today due to the spread of a new virus that may potentially be an epidemic. The relief teachers allowed us to talk with each other when our work was done. So, school ended quickly. So much for a skip button right? Come on laugh with me. No? Okay… Let’s get back to the story. I made my way to my locker. I placed my materials into the silver locker. I then made my way down the corridor. Home. The only place that I wish I was right now. I looked at the clock at the end of the corridor, 3.30. My mother should be coming to get me soon. I ambled towards the front door, freedom at last. My heart skipped a beat. A chill? A GHOST? I spun around expecting to face a horrible creature, but there was nothing there. I turned around and hit a large solid object. I flinched and fell back. I looked up only to see the fat janitor who is surprisingly good at nothing else but scolding the students. “Hurry up you little punk, I have to mop the hallways.” I glared at him and stood up. I walked for a few steps and flipped him the finger when the fat man wasn’t looking. The gold piece…. what did it mean? D and S? Is it some kind of abbreviation? Was it some kind of tradition my family had endured for the past generations? I took out the relic. The piece seemed to be emitting some sort of aura. As if protected by some sort of magic. Black magic? I chuckled, what a ridiculous assumption. I flipped the object open only to see the letters at the same exact place. Eternity of love? So these are names then. I touched the engravement only to feel it move. It’s loose? I took the shiny gold piece out. Nothing..just a blank sheet of gold as usual. I was expecting something more. I fiddled with the relic more. Again more of the thin gold sheets came out. I counted at least 20 thin sheets. How can something this small contain something so large in quantity. Then as the final sheet fell out, the back of the gold piece. A note. I unfolded the contents. “As my final moment approaches, I beg you to bury the box I have hidden in the basement at the eden’s tree.” Eden’s tree? What? Where is that? My curiosity peaked. HONK! I jumped. “Wade!” I looked unwillingly towards the sound. I was horrified to see the face of a demon staring right back at me. My mother impatiently staring at me. “Sorry, mom.” I got into the back of the car and endured a 5 minute scolding from her. “Anyways, what type of cake do you want for your birthday?” My birthday I totally forgot! “Any cake will do ,mom, just make sure it isn’t a black forest cake.” I was so engrossed in my school life that I forgot that I had a birthday. The relic. What type of things did the box contained? Treasure? I soon faded into the unconscious state of daydreaming, as I always do, and thought about the mysterious gold piece.

The magnificence of the view ahead. He could not believe his eyes, as it drew closer, Dyrien found himself stretching out his arms. Ulton with the typical blind faith, followed Dyrien. “It’s much more beautiful than what I’ve imagined. The light shining from the castle of holiness, I can feel it, Ulton! Can you feel it?” An excited bark pierced in the air. With that thought, the dirty boy charged to the castle. His heart pumped as he neared his destination. Dyrien pierced through the air to reach the gate. As he reached the heavenly gate, there stood demons in his way. “Halt! You are not allowed to enter Glendel.” Dyrien stood there in a state of confusion. “Why? I thought everyone was allowed to enter the gate?” “I am sorry, young child, but no one is allowed to enter until the Royal Wedding has ended.” Royal wedding?. Dyrien stood there with utter disappointment. The guards noticing his sadness, called him out. “Look there is no way we can allow you to get into the castle, but out of our generosity, we will give you some gold to stay in a village inn.” The guards gave some gold to him. A few gold coins, enough for a night and a meal. Dyrien smiled, “Thank you! I’ll be sure to repay you one day!” The puppy barked joyously. “The village is just west from here.” Fool, we should have just killed them. He paused. His arms felt heavy. He couldn’t stop shaking. Then, he walked off. His foot felt gravel. This must be the path to the village. With the puppy snuggling on his arms, Dyrien strolled on the path. He entered the inn, but no one was there. “Ah, welcome. How may I help you young man?” A woman’s voice. Old, in fact. “Oh, can I get a room for a night?” “Sure! 2 Gold coins please.” Dyrien handed out the gold pieces. “I see you have a puppy there. I’m sorry sonny but I can’t allow that animal in the inn.” Dyrien looked at her and said, “What if i offer 4 gold coins?” “No, I am sorry. Bribery isn’t going to work.” Dyrien pouted and gave a steely glare. “However, the inn needs an extra helping hand. Tell you what, if you work for me, I’ll let you and the puppy stay.” “Splendid! That is a good deal.” “Your room is just right at the back.” He strolled silently towards the ever so shabby room. Look at this! , he thought, It is such a mess! Reminds me of home.
